Rise of Pakistani Entertainment Industry
Entertainment is an action or activity which holds the interest of audience or provides them amusement. The modern forms of entertainment have a long history. Most recognizable forms of entertainment are theatre, circus drama, dance, music, games and storytelling. The primarily purpose of entertainment is having fun and laughter. Although some forms of entertainment can have serious purposes. The audience may have active or passive roles during an entertainment activity. Modern technology has provided new dimensions to entertainment. The term show business covers all aspects of entertainment including fashion industry. There are two main elements of entertainment (creative and business). The creative element includes actors, singers, dancers, writers, models, musicians and directors etc. The business element includes producers, managers, agents, advertisers, distributors, designers and editors etc.
After partition, many Muslim entertainers migrated to Pakistan and most of them settled in Lahore. In those days, the entertainment industry was limited to movies, theatres and radio. A few famous names of this era are Noor Jehan, Nisar Bazmi, Khawaja Pervaiz, Agha Talish, Darpan, Santosh Kumar, Nayyar Sultana, Shamim Ara, Ahmed Rushdi, Neelo and Aslam Pervaiz. These legends produced quality stuff suitable for watching with family. When Pakistan Television was launched, it gave new opportunities to artists. Radio Pakistan and Pakistan Television were under government control and there were no private radio and TV channels. The entertainers of old era did not have ample opportunity to utilize their talent in government controlled media.
Surprisingly, a military dictator (General Pervez Musharraf) is credited with promoting the freedom of speech and expression. During his rule, a number of licenses were issued to private TV channels. At the moment, several TV channels are contributing to entertainment stuff. HumTV, Geo Entertainment, ARY Digital, Urdu One, Geo Kahani, ARY Zindagi, A-Plus, Express Entertainment, Filmazia, TV One, ATV, PTV Home and Hum Sitaray are leading entertainment TV channels. In the past few years, these entertainment channels have produced quality dramas, short films, sitcoms, telefilms, movies, award shows, talent hunt shows, late night shows and fashion shows.
Dramas like Humsafar, Meri Zaat Zarra-e-Benishan, Zindagi Gulzar Hai, Diyar-e-Dil, Sheh-e-Zaat, Meray Qatil Meray Dildar, Digest Writer, Mann Mayal and Dillagi have been worth watching. In the laughter arena, sitcom like Bulbulay, Shadi Ka Laddu, Kis Din Mera Viah Howay Ga, Double Trouble, Hum Sub Umeed Say Hain, Timmy G and S.H.E have made the audience smile and laugh. We have also seen great telefimls like Kitni Girhain Baqi Hain, Daam-e-Mohabbat, Uff Tera Jalwa, Resham Si Shaam, Aakhri Saans, Ishq For Sale, Ishq Wala Love Pyar Say Dartay Huay, Dil Tum Pay Aagya and Lady Boxer, Yoon Hum Miley, Gulabi Saree, Ishq For Sale, Behadd, Sitara Ko Mohabbat and Burns Road Ki Neelofar. Game shows like Jeeto Pakistan, Eidi Sub Kay Liye and Inaam Ghar have provided the audience suitable alternatives of Tariq Aziz Show. Morning shows like Jago Pakistan, Good Morning Pakistan, Morning with Farah, Nadia Khan Show, The Morning Show, Satrangi and Salam Zindagi have made our mornings pleasant and refreshing. Talent hunt shows like Pakistan Idol, Veet Super Model, Hero Ban’nay Ki Tarang, Pakistan Got Talent and Voice of Pakistan have identified talented individuals for the industry. Late night shows Hasb-e-Haal, Khabarnak, Khabardar and Mazak Raat make their audience smile before going to bed. Movies such as Khuda Kay Liye, Bol, Jawani Phir Nahi Ani, Manto, War, Wrong Number, Na Maloom Afraad, Karachi Say Lahore, Jaleebi and Mah-e-Mir have revived our film industry. Pakistani families are now back in cinemas.
