Synergetic Announces The Release of HBO Europe’s “Umbre” For Streaming On Hulu
LOS ANGELES, May 27, 2016 /PRNewswire/ — Hulu acquired HBO Europe’s ‘Umbre’ for AVOD streaming earlier this May. HBO Europe’s Original Programming has had tremendous success throughout Europe. But while HBO has syndicated its American content for years to other countries under subsidiaries and joint ventures, it has yet to be seen how the European content will fare domestically. “Umbre” is the first of potentially many HBO Europe productions to hit the USA. Distributed by Synergetic and premiering this month on Hulu, the jury is out as to whether or not American audiences have a palette for proven successes in foreign languages.

Umbre revolves around taxi driver Relu, a mild-mannered family man who lives a double life as a collector for a local mob boss. The show explores complex themes such as marriage, parenthood, and keeping secrets through masterfully realized characters. Umbre was a smash hit and picked up for a second season in January.
“Although I was inspired by Scandinavian and South Korean crime movies, a lot came from my experience growing up in a tough neighborhood,” says writer and director Bogdan Mirică. “Crooks use sledgehammers, monkey wrenches, steel bars — anything to hand, which is so much scarier than guns.” With astounding critical acclaim (currently 9.1 on IMDB), Umbre has proven to be a favorite. The question now becomes whether or not subtitles or even unfamiliar cultures will daunt similar popularity in the US.
